The Importance of Connection in College

In 1938, scientists began tracking 268 Harvard sophomores, hoping that a long-term research study would reveal clues for leading happy and healthy lives. After following these individuals for 75 years, the research revealed the most important key to happiness: Relationships.

Feeling connected to other people is at the heart of our well-being.

Good friends bring fun in the good times and support in the bad times. They share in your joys, celebrations, hardships, and sorrows, and help keep your happiness quotient and spirits high. Having meaningful connections with others significantly reduces stress, boosts self-confidence and a sense of belonging, and can even improve the immune system and physical health (Tnaman, 2020). Friends see, understand, and accept us for who we are.

College is a time of immense personal growth. It’s also a time where you can make genuine best friends. We all know that the obligations that come with being a college student can be difficult, so it’s good to have a helping hand when you’re dealing with that exhausting research paper or are having a bad day. We all need someone to lean on from time to time. And, students who make an effort to form relationships in college are more likely to succeed academically and graduate on time (Cleveland University, 2020).

Campus organizations, events, clubs, Greek life, your dorm or apartment building, or your classes are great places to meet friends. Every little hello, introduction, or smile can count and help you connect to your community at college. And, a phone call to your family or your friend from home can go a long way, too.

Make an effort to build on your friendships. Grab coffee with friends, eat meals together, study at the library together, and make some fun plans for the weekend together. College is a time when you can make lifelong connections! It’ll make both you and them happier, healthier, and bring your favorite college memories.
